History
-
The Shields River was named in 1806 for John Shields, blacksmith on the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
-
Clyde Park was named for a Clydesdale stallion imported to the valley in 1887.
-
Ed and Bernice Hium purchased the ranch in the late 1920s from the Lutheran Church. The original nine‑room farmhouse burned down on Easter Sunday.
-
Ed and Bernice ranched the land until retiring in 1972.
-
Clyde Park population: 352 residents in 1920; 309 as of the 2015 census.
-
The valley’s iconic grain elevators were built between 1915–1919 along the Northern Pacific Railway.
-
The barn — the heart of the ranch today — is believed to have been built between 1895–1900 from a Sears & Roebuck mail‑order kit delivered by rail.
